Should the spirit of the 2nd Earl of Salisbury hover briefly above St Martin’s Lane, Cecil Court and St Martin’s Court, he would see little evidence of the fashionable enclave he developed in the first decades of the 17th century. He would, however, see Burleigh Mansions (once the home of actress Ellen Terry), dated 1892, with its fine, well- preserved shop fronts, immediately north of the Duke of York's. Further north he would see a symmetrical five-storey red-brick chamber block of 1899, Incorporating The Salisbury public house, which perpetuates the old Earl's memory, adjacent to the Albery Theatre. Architecturally the pub is one of the finest in the West End, having an excellent collection of frosted and cut glass, rich mahogany fittings and Art Nouveau candelabra. The Earl would also see with great pleasure a building of considerable moment to the south of the pub: the Duke of York’s Theatre (originally the Trafalgar Square Theatre), designed by Walter Emden and opened on 10 September 1892, two years after the Garrick Theatre in Charing Cross Road, which Emden produced in partnership with C. J. Phipps.
Although Emden designed only eight theatres from scratch, thus falling well short of the numbers produced by Frank Matcham, Phipps, W. G. R. Sprague and Bertie Crewe, the Duke of York’s, which he built for Frank Wyatt and Violet Melnotte, Is a building of considerable quality and a tribute to the architect’s planning skills, albeit enhanced a little by contrast with its modern neighbours. The symmetrical front, in restrained later classical style, Is four storeys high and faced In pale green painted brickwork with cream stucco detail. The arcaded and channelled stucco ground storey is painted battleship grey. At first- floor level, above a much altered canopy, is a balustraded loggia with Ionic columns fronting the upper-circle bar; the elevation is unified by the judicious use of Ionic pilasters, decorative entablatures and a crowning cornice. High-quality original wrought-iron gates close off access ways to the north and south.
Internally, a strangely sub-17th-century entrance vestibule opens into a square foyer, coloured pink between white and gold fluted Corinthian pilasters above a panelled dado. A plaque records major alterations to the building carried out in 1980 by architects Jaques, Muir and Partners for the owners Capital Radio, who used part of It as a studio. The theatre was again refurbished in 1999, in a process of redecoration with minor alterations to enhance the whole Interior.
The narrowness of the site, and the headaches it must have given the architects, are evident In the picturesque but compressed three-tier cream, gold and pink Louis XVI-style auditorium, and the full- width proscenium arch. Dressing rooms are housed in a separate block, linked to the rear of the main building. Balcony fronts to the royal and upper circles are quite lavishly decorated with arabesque and grotesque ornamentation, while simple palm groups are used above a reeded and ribboned band on the front of the gallery, which has remained unrestored since the building was taken over by Capital Radio. An elegant ribbed and coffered dome, ornamented with acanthus, masks and winged figures, completes the ensemble. The upper-clrcle bar perpetuates the auditorium’s decorative theme with some success, but the remaining bars are of little moment. A plaque in the upper-circle bar records a mass meeting of actors and actresses on 1 December 1929, and Its resolution to form the British Actors' Equity Association.
Timber sub-stage machinery was probably Installed In 1905 for a performance of Peter Pan with Charlie Chaplin, but regrettably this has been virtually demolished. Under the fly floor a cyclorama track was In situ in the early 1970s.
The theatre’s opening production starred Declma Moore in The Wedding Eve, and Marie Tempest performed here in The Marriage of Kitty in 1902. Much later, one of the theatre’s greatest successes came in the 1980s with a production of Stepping Out by Richard Harris, which ran for well over two years.

The Stalls exist as one undivided section, running deep into the theatre, longer than it is wide. The longest rows in the middle of the auditorium have only 21 seats, with the shortest towards the rear having only 6. This gives the section a tunnel like quality, with the depth and circle overhangs disturbing sight lines in the rear section. The Stalls do not curve, giving clear albeit angled vision to those sat on the extreme ends of each row. Pillars at the ends of row H and row Q do create obstructions, and it would be wise to avoid seats directly behind these, as well as by the side due to restricted legroom.

The Circle overhang begins at row J, affecting rows K and back. If a show uses levels on-stage this means that actor’s heads and bodies cannot be seen from row K back. On a flat stage however very little action would be missed. The sound box is at the back of the stalls House Left, taking seats out of rows U to S. The rear of the stalls feel very far back from the stage, and due to the low rake can be restricted by other audience members. If you are watching with children, aim to sit closer to the front as the rake is a problem throughout the whole of this section. Legroom on the whole is adequate.

Due to the architecture of the theatre the Royal Circle is affected by the shape, which creates a deep curve and is blocked by the position of the boxes on either side. The section feels low and close to the stage which is good for those sitting in the first two rows. The small number of seats is undivided and unlike the stalls the rows are longer than they are deep. Each row follows the heavy curve of the balcony, giving the three seats at either end of the row an angled and restricted view of the stage, and should be avoided unless discounted.

The section is more heavily raked than the stalls, meaning visibility towards the rear is good for those sitting towards the centre of each row. The Upper Circle overhangs at row B, affecting those seats in row C-F. Legroom on the whole is acceptable, and the section feels comfortable and intimate.

The Upper Circle suffers similar problems to the Royal Circle due to the shape and curve of the auditorium. The rake is a lot steeper in this section, giving a better overall view of the stage.

The 5 seats to the end of each row are restricted as the bottom of the stage and apron are cut off from view. Depending on the production this may vary. The extreme ends of each row are heavily restricted and should be avoided.

The overhang which still exists from the old balcony level starts at row B and creates sight problems for the back four rows. Best seats are towards the centre of each row however, and The Seat Inspector would advise choosing a central position over proximity to the stage, as a lot of action can be missed due to the shape of the auditorium and the restrictions from the boxes.

Schnitzler’s original play is rarely seen in London – one recent production was at the fringe venue the Arcola Theatre in Dalston in 2005. While it was first performed in 1912 at the Kleines Theater in Berlin, it was banned in the author’s native country until the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918. Icke’s new version modernises the play, setting it in a contemporary hospital, while also posing questions about human’s innate views on identity, perception and bias.  (plus)

Commentaire: The Almeida Theatre’s intensely atmospheric production of Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke transfers to the West End in late 2018, with Patsy Ferran and Matthew Needham reprising their central roles in Rebecca Frecknall’s production.
Williams’ play is set in Mississippi and centres on a minister’s daughter named Alma, who finds herself entangled in an impassioned and complicated relationship with John Buchanan, an unruly young doctor and her next door neighbour.

Produced by the Almeida and Sonia Friedman Productions, Summer and Smoke transfers to the Duke of York’s Theatre from 10th November to 19th January, with tickets now on sale.

Following its initial sell-out run at the Almeida, the production received critical praise across the board, with many paying tribute to Ferran’s performance in the central role, with LondonTheatre.co.uk hailing her performance as a memorable one which ‘demonstrates she is going from strength to strength’.

Williams finished writing Summer and Smoke in 1948, although it was almost 60 years until it was first produced in London. The play received its West End premiere in 2006 at the Apollo Theatre. Directed by Adrian Noble, and starring Rosamund Pike and Chris Carmack, the play cut its 16-week run short by 10 weeks, owing to poor ticket sales.  (plus)

Commentaire: This was a completely revised version of “Jeeves”, the 1975 flop, re-titled “By Jeeves”. Instead of the large-scale original, the new version was a small-scale play with songs. Ayckbourn had thrown out the aunts and the pigs and all the other eccentric stuff and created an entirely new plot: Bertie intends to play his banjo at a charity performance at the local village hall but Jeeves hides the offending instrument. Andrew Lloyd Webber came up with eight new songs with five songs retained from the original. This time it was a success, described as “one of the slickest comebacks since Lazarus”.
